I know I’m feeding into what I criticized in a previous post, but Cuban TV showed a healthier looking, Castro with Chavez. That old Cuban never ceases to amaze me. Castro fought back the rumors of his death by appearing on television and looking better.

In the latest video, Chavez said he found his friend to be “of good humor, with a good face and in good spirits.” He said the pair discussed a variety of issues, including the world’s energy crisis, and that Castro showed “much clarity, as always in his ideas and analysis.”

Maybe, Castro can talk some sense into his buddy.

I have had the busiest day and all I want to do is go to sleep. I’m hiding beind my hair in this picture.

Though the perenial trend of Machismo is unflagging in Latin America…more women are being appointed to cabinet posts. These appointments also are in addition to women elected as heads of states in some countries.  Chile’s first female president filled half her cabinet with women upon taking office last March. Ecuador’s new president Rafael Correa assigned women seven of 17 cabinet posts earlier this month. Other leaders regionwide have named women to key posts in the Economy, Interior and Defense Ministries.

Maxine Waters is kind of a big deal…

… and by “big deal”, I mean freaking bad ass.  If you haven’t listened to her speech at the protests this past weekend in DC, get your tail over to Democracy Now! and rock it out.  She will give you chills, and make you want to get all 1965 and buy a VW van and drive up there, John Lennon glasses and all, and get your protest on.

Rock this one:

It’s a well known that Hugo Chavez often takes leave of his senses and will berate world leaders if they oppose him. Felipe Calderon, can now be added to Chavez’s list…simply because Calderon indirectly criticised his leftist practices. Calderon, simply stated that nationalization of industries for the sake of populism is wrong and it is currently taking place in  Latin America. Well, Chavez went on a complete Calderon bashing tirade and referred to him as the “little gentlemen” ( which sounds much worse in Spanish). Of course…being a populist…everyone loved it. Calderon, also knew that Chavez did not support him because of the close presidential race in Mexico last year and instead chose to recognize AMLO..( the leftist). Should, Calderon have avoided the rants of Chavez by not mentioning anything about populism and nationalization in Latin America? Or should megalomaniac’s be allowed to insult world leaders?

Chavez, in my opinion is giving the Latin Left a bad name. He is so sensational that the good practices of Lula in Brazil and Bachelet in Chile are going virtually unrecognized in the geo political world. The media is feeding into Chavez’s ego, therefore he should be ignored.

On different note…Teri..rock on with your vanilla ice, lovin badself. I spent my saturday night dancing in a really smokey nightclub. I didn’t bring my camera, but my homie, Michael did…and he took some pictures of me dancing on the smokey dance floor. See picture above.

Nationalization…for-Evo?

January 25, 2007 at 2:05 pm (Latin America, Uncategorized)

disgraced6.JPGThe above picture is of me finding out the latest events on my school campus. The university has fallen victim to a surge in crime. I’ll say this…I’m glad that my tuition dollars have gone into daytime classes and that this is my last semester.
Well…things aren’t looking so good in Bolivia for Evo Morales. During a 4 and half hour speech opposition lawmakers marched out of Congress in protest Monday. It sounds to me like Evo is trying to mimic a younger Fidel Castro. Evo was also not wearing his sweater. Later Monday, at an anniversary rally attended by 15,000 supporters in La Paz, Morales declared that while 2006 was the year of natural gas “nationalization,” this is the year the state will take control of the mining sector. Wow…more nationalization.
Morales made repeated references to aid received from his leftist allies Venezuela and Cuba, whose leaders are also known for interminable speeches, but also mentioned aid from the United States. Bolivia, can go nowhere but up…let’s see how the nationalization pans out….it may truly work to the advantage of the poor and to the detriment of the rich.

We MUST get on this.  I have a tent.  We can camp. I am spinning in my desk chair right this very second, much to the chagrin of fellow employees.  Call Laura… she and I braved quite a few Rage concerts.

UPDATE:  Upon further research, I have discovered that they play ON MY ACTUAL BIRTHDAY.  Please send all b-day gifts in the form of cash this year, as I will be selling my soul for the $249.00 ticket and plane fare.  I am so about to set up a PayPal account…

Reason to Stick to the Rezzies!!!

January 24, 2007 at 10:31 am (Uncategorized)

callie_gettin_down1.JPG

I found this little gem of a moment from our highschool days. Teri and I were singing our favorite David Bowie tune in the middle of a pretty big party at Teri’s house. Teri..I think that was 1997!

That was a good year..even in a political sense. I’ll just leave it at that.

Now..The State of the Union..well..what to say. The president certainly seemed much more subdued in comparison to the other State of the Union addresses. By the looks of things..most senators are rejecting his new war plan, because it is not in the national interest…not that it ever really was. An agenda is never in anyone’s best interest..unless it’s the preson pushing the agenda. Sen. Joseph Biden, the panel’s chairman, said the legislation is “not an attempt to embarrass the president. … It’s an attempt to save the president from making a significant mistake with regard to our policy in Iraq.” In the words of Champ Kind from the Anchor Man…Jospeh Biden should have said “whammy” after that statement. I’m referring to the “whammy” stated to Veronica Corningstone when she is about to read the news for the first time.

El Presidente

Felipe Calderon has some new reforms in mind for Mexico. I’ve heard this time and time again with newly elected presidents in the country of my origin. Calderon, who may be different simply because he is some what of a rebel. The Mexican presidency is now twice removed from the PRI which will also stand in his favor.  Everyone had such high hopes for Fox and he didn’t deliver.

Calderon, has also started a large scale assault on drug trafficking and drug related crime. He especially has attempted a clean up in Michoacan, his home state. Drugs are a problem in many countries around the world….Mexico however has some other serious problems. Calderon, however, is doing something about it (or at least says he will). In addition to opening the markets to more competition, Calderon says that his first big reform that will pass through congress is a tax structure. Currently, the tax take is equivalent to 11 percent of the gross domestic product…that is the second lowest level in Latin America…after Haiti. Yowsa! That is not good.  Haiti borders the Dominican Republic on the
island of Hispaniola…Mexico borders the freaking United States! Come on, Mexico!

Calderon also plans to reform PEMEX, however, in order to reform PEMEX… amendments to the constitution would need to occur first. Calderon is not going for a complete overhaul of the state owned petroleum company, but instead suggests that stocks be sold to foreign investment. Something has to be done with PEMEX…I’ll save you the actual words I said about PEMEX to my professor, Dr. Taylor.
